Microbiology Flashcards
(26 cards)
Viridans strep
Infection through dental surgery
Streptococcus aglactiae predisposing factors
Diabetes and breast cancer
Streptococcus galloyticus
Causes endocarditis. Strongly associated with colon cancer
Bacillus cereus
Food poisoning. Toxin: cereuide found in fried rice
Clostridia perfingens
Gram positive. Gas gangrene. Alpha toxin. Boxcar rods. Found in soil and meats (meats, poultry, and gravy)
Clostridia tetani
Tetanus. AB toxin.
Clostridia botulinum
Floppy baby–infants inhaling spores from carpet or raw honey. AB toxin
Shigella
GN rid. Bloody diarrhea. Day care
Salmonella enterica (serotype typhimurium)
Typhoid fever. Rose spots
Vibrio vulnificus
Diarrhea or death with liver disease. Raw oysters
Bactericides
GN rod. Intra-abdominal abscesses. Through broken mucosal surfaces. Obligate anaerobe rod
Pseudomonas aeruginosa
Obligate aerobe. Blue/green on agar with fruity smell. Multi drug resistance. Biofilms. Opportunistic pathogen
Klebsiella pneumoniae
Opportunistic pathogen. In alcoholics and malnourished.
Rod
Causes currant jelly sputum
Neisseria meningitides
Kissing kidney bean. Meningitis.
Prerequisite nasopharyngeal colonization
What phase of bacterial growth does spore production occur?
The stationary phase
What are Koch’s postulates?
- The microbe must be present in all disease cases
- It must be isolated from infected host and grown in pure culture
- Disease is reproduced when pure colony is given to new host
- Microbe must be isolated from intentionally infected host
What bacteria are alpha hemolytic?
Strep pneumoniae. Viridans strep
Strep pyogenes
Group A strep. Pharyngitis, cellulitis, necrotizing fasciitis, scarlet fever, TSS, rheumatic fever. Acute glomerulonephritis
Strep pneumoniae
Alpha hemolytic. Meningitis, otitis media. Diplococci
Enterococcus so
Group D strep. Blood stream infections (line related) endocarditis, hospital UTIs
Bacillus anthracis
GP rod. Spores. Either inhaled or cutaneous( dark spots surrounded with red, eschar). AB toxin.
Corynebacterium diptheriae
Gram positive. Non-spore forming rod. AB toxin. Pseudomembrane
Enterohemorrhagic E. Coli (EHEC)
GN rod. From undercooked meat. Antibiotics contraindicated. Toxin. Hemorrhagic colitis
Vibrio parahaemolyticus
GN rod. Raw seafood (especially oysters). Diarrhea
