Microbiology 5 Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is first line protection
physical, chemical and anatomical barriers to infection
= natural resistance
what is second line protection?
- inflammation
- fever
What is passive protection?
- cannot infect host if the site it lands on is not compatible with the pathogens nutritional and metabolic needs
What are the two different types of third line protection?
innate and adaptive
What are the characteristics of the innate immunity
- non specific
- immediate
- no memory
What are the characteristics of the adaptive immunity
- highly specific
-several days to become active
memory and faster the next time
Define immunity
both the innate and adaptive responses to protect the host from infections by pathogens
What are vaccines?
artificial immunity that is induced actively by injecting the individual with a pathogen or its products
Two types of vaccines?
Live attenuated and inactivated
define sterilisation
the killing or removal of all viable organisms within a growth medium
define inhibition
effectively limitng microbial growth
define decontamination
treatment of an object to make it safe to handle
define Disinfection
directly targets the removal of all pathogens, not neccasarily all organisms
what is bacteriostatic
inhibits but doesnt kill
what is bacteriocidal
kills outright
What is bacteriolytic
lyses cells
what are the five factors affecting food spoilage
water ph structure oxygen temperature
