microbiology part four Flashcards
(19 cards)
What is epidemiology?
the study of the frequency and distribution of disease and the factors that contribute to their spread
What is Endemic?
when disease is present in the population in particular limited geographical areas
What is epidemic?
when disease show high incidence in a wider area, usually developing from an endemic focus
What is a pandemic?
diseases that are distributed worldwide
What is a sporadic disease?
is neither an endemic nor epidemic but occurs only occasionally
What is a reservoir infection
the site where the pathogen can multiply or survive until it is transferred to its host.
common source?
epidemic results from an infection of a large number of people from a contaminated source such as food or water
Nosocomial infections are?
contracted from a medical facility
There are four stages of an infectious disease, what happens during the first stage; the incubation period?
this is the time between the acquisition of the organism and the beginning of symptoms. Can vary from hours to weeks.
There are four stages of an infectious disease, what happens in the second stage; the Prodrome period?
no specific symptoms such as fever and loss of appetite occur
There are four stages to an infectious disease, what happens in the third stage; the specific illness period?
the overt characteristic signs and symptoms of the specific disease occur
There are four stages of an infectious disease, what happens in the fourth stage; the recovery period?
the illness abates and the payient returns to a healthy state
what are the four stages of an infectious disease?
- the incubation period
- the prodrome period
- the specific illness period
- the recovery period
What is an anaerobe?
any organism that does not require oxygen for growth. it may even react negtively or die if oxygen is present.
what is an obligative anaerobe?
organisms that are harmed by the presence of oxygen?
what is an areotolerant organism?
organisms that cannot use oxygen for growth but tolerate its presence
What is a faculative anaerobe?
organisms that can grow without oxygen but will use it if its present
what is an obligate aerobe?
needs oxygen as it cannoit respire anaerobically
what are microaerophiles?
need oxygen as they cannot respire anaerobically, but are poisoned by a high oxygen concentration.
