1
Q

What can microorganisms (like bacteria) be used for?

A

To make really useful stuff e.g insulin or penicillin

2
Q

What happens in industry?

A

Microorganisms are grown in large containers called fermenters

3
Q

What is the fermenter full of?

A

Liquid ‘culture medium’ in which microorganisms can grow and reproduce

4
Q

Why are the conditions inside the fermentation vessels kept at the optimum levels?

A

For growth - this means the yield of products from the microorganisms can be as big as possible

5
Q

Where are nutrients needed by the microorganisms for growth provided in?

A

The liquid culture medium

6
Q

Why is the pH monitored and kept at the optimum level?

A

For the microorganisms’ enzymes to work efficiently

7
Q

What does this keep as high as possible? (Ph monitored and kept at optimum level)

A

Rate of reaction and product yield

8
Q

What is also monitored and kept at an optimum level?

A

Temperature

9
Q

What does a water-cooled jacket do?

A

Make sure it doesn’t get so hot that the enzymes denature

10
Q

What are microorganisms kept in contact with and by what?

A

Fresh medium by paddles they circulate the medium around the vessel

11
Q

What does this increase and why? (Fresh medium)

A

The product yield because microorganisms can always access the nutrients needed for growth

12
Q

What happens if the microorganisms need oxygen for respiration?

A

It’s added by pumping in sterile air

13
Q

Why does this increase the product yield? (Microorganisms need Oxygen for respiration)

A

Because microorganisms can always respire to provide the energy for growth

14
Q

What are vessels sterilised between?

A

Uses with superheated steam that kills unwanted microbes

15
Q

What does having aseptic conditions increase and why?

A

The product yield because the microorganisms aren’t competing with other organisms. Also means product doesn’t get contaminated
