Microscope Components Flashcards
(12 cards)
A lens located at the top of the microscope that further enlarges the image produced by the lower magnifying lens
Eyepiece
The tube that holds the top and bottom lenses at the proper distance from each other for accurate focusing
Barrel
The vertical support that connects the base to the upper parts and is typically used to safely carry the microscope
Arm
A rotating part that holds multiple lenses and allows the user to switch between them to change magnification
Revolving nosepiece
A lens positioned close to the specimen that provides the initial magnification and contributes most to the image quality
Objective Lens
A large control that moves the stage or body tube up and down significantly to quickly bring the specimen into general focus
Course Adjustment
A smaller control that moves the stage or optics very slightly to fine-tune the focus and increase image clarity
Fine Adjustment
The precise control mechanism used for sharpening the image once it is roughly focused
Fine Focus
A flat platform where the specimen slide is placed for observation, often equipped with clips to secure it in place
Stage
The bottom support of the microscope that provides stability and often houses the illumination system
Base
The built-in illumination system that shines upward through the specimen to make it visible under the lenses
Light Source
A component located beneath the stage that controls the amount of light passing through the specimen by adjusting the size of the opening
Diaphragm
