Microscopes Flashcards
(18 cards)
Light Source
The light source controls light coming through an object and magnifies it
Eyepiece
The eyepiece is part of th emicroscope you look through
Fine Focus Knob
The fine focus knob is the small knob on a microscope used to sharpen the image after using the coarse focus.
Diaphragm
The diaphragm is a part of the microscope that controls the amount of light reaching the specimen.
The coarse focus knob
The coarse focus knob is the large knob on a microscope used to move the stage up and down quickly to bring the specimen into general focus.
Objective lens
The objective lens is the part of a microscope that is closest to the specimen and magnifies the image.
Revolving Nose Peice
The revolving nosepiece is the rotating part of a microscope that holds the objective lenses and allows you to switch between them.
micrometre
A micrometre (µm) is a unit of length used to measure very small objects, like cells and bacteria.
Stage clips
Stage clips are small metal clips on a microscope that hold the slide in place on the stage.
Stage
The stage is the flat platform on a microscope where the slide is placed for viewing.
Specimen
A specimen is the sample or object placed on a microscope slide to be examined under the microscope.
Mirror
The mirror on a microscope is used to reflect light up through the stage and onto the specimen.
Root Hair cells
A root hair cell is a plant cell with a long, thin extension (root hair) that increases surface area to absorb water and minerals from the soil.
Slide and cover Slip
Slide: A flat, rectangular piece of glass or plastic where the specimen is placed for viewing under a microscope.
Cover Slip: A thin, small square or round piece of glass or plastic that is placed on top of the specimen to protect it and keep it flat.
Wet mount
A wet mount is a way of preparing a microscope slide by placing a drop of liquid (usually water) on the specimen and covering it with a cover slip.
Transpiration
Transpiration is the process where water evaporates from the leaves of plants, mainly through tiny openings called stomata.
Translocation
Translocation is the movement of food substances (like sugars) made in the leaves to other parts of the plant through the phloem.
Specialised Cells
Specialised cells are cells that have specific shapes and features to perform a particular function in plants or animals.
