Microscopy Flashcards
(12 cards)
When were the first light microscope developed?
Mid 17th century
What does a light microscope use to from an image ?
Light microscopes use a beam of light to form an object
What is the maxium magnification of a light microscope?
Around ×2000
List two advantages of light microscopes ?
They are relativley cheap and can be used to magnify live specimen
List two disadvantages of light microscopes?
Light microscopes have limited resouloution and magnification
When was the electron microscope invented ?
In the 1930s
What do electron microscopes use to from images?
A beam of electrons
What is the maxium magnification of a electron microscope?
Up to ×2,000,000
List two disadvantages of a electron microscope
Electron microscopes are large and very expensive. They also have to be kept in special temperatue and humidity contolled rooms
What has the electron microscope enabled biologists to do ?
It has enabled biologists to see and understand many more sub-cellular structures
What are advantages of using electron microscopes over light microscopes ?
An electron microscope has much higher magnification and resolving power than a light microscope. This means that it can be used to study cells in much finer detail
What is the formula for calculating magnification?
Magnification = Size of image / size of real object
