Microscopy Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is the limit
The resolution
What is the resolution
The ability to see two objects as separate
Describe a light microscope
A light microscope is limited by the wavelengths of light uses light and lenses to form an image of a specimen and magnify it they let us see individual cells and larger sub cellular structures like nuclei
Describe an electron microscope
Electron microscopes have a higher resolution and magnification they can be used to study cells in a much finer detail like the internal structures of mitochondria and chloroplast, plasmids and ribosomes
Describe an scanning electron microscope
Shows the detail of the surface of an object (3D image)
Describe a transmisión electron microscope
Shows within a specimen (2d thin section)
What is magnification
The size of an image compared to its actual size
What is the equation for calculating magnification
Size of image divided by the actual size of the object
What is the equation for calculating the size of the image
Magnification times actual size of the object
What is the equation for calculating the actual size of the object
Size of image divided by magnification
Metre symbol and size in metres
m = 1m
Millimetre symbol and size in metres
mm = 10-3 m
Micrometer symbol and size in metres
um = 10-6 m
Nanometre symbol and size in metres
nm = 10-9m
