Transpiration Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is transpiration?
The process in which plants loose water vapour from the surface of the leaves
How does transpiration work?
Water evaporates into the air spaces of the leaf then diffuses our through the stomata
Name what conditions speed up transpiration and why
Heat- causes water to evaporate quicker
Dry-increase water vapour concentration gradient
Wind-moves water away from the leaf maintaining the concentration gradient
Where is most water lost during transpiration
The stomata
What time do the stomata close
When it’s dark (carbon dioxide is no longer needed because there is no sunlight)
What does a plant do to prevent wilting
When the plant is losing water faster than its being replaced by the roots the stomata can close to prevent wilting
How can you measure transpiration
Using a potometer
