Micturition Flashcards
(10 cards)
Hypogastric n.
Sympathetic
alpha fibers contract internal sphincter
beta fibers relax the bladder
Also sensory for pain and overdistension
Pelvic n.
parasympathetic
Ach contracts Detrusor muscle and contracts the bladder
Also sends sensory info about distension
Pudendal n.
motor to external sphincter
Voluntary control
symptoms of voiding disorders
stranguria pollakiuria diminished stream POSTURES inc. residual volume
most common cause of storage disorders
and its treatment?
urethral sphincter mechanism incompetence (USMI)
young, middle aged spayed female dogs
treat with Phenylpropanolamine (PPA) (Alpha adrenergic agonist?) or Estrogen
most common cause of voiding disorders?
signs?
and its treatment?
- Detrusor atony
acquired post obstruction, or lower motor disease
*Larger SOFT bladder, easy to express
Stranguria with weak stream
Tx: Bethanechol - Parasympathomimetic 3 days after Catheter placement keep bladder small
DO NOT USE IF URETHRAL OBSTRUCTION IS PRESENT
Urethrospasm
and treatment
relatively common post catheterization, especially in cats
Large FIRM bladder, stream suddenly stops
tx: alpha antagonist (Phenoxybenzamine, Prazosin, Tamulosin(Dogs Only) )
Interneuron reflex with Lumbar injury
Pelvic n. senses distension and stimulates arch and Ach release from Pelvic n. Allowing Detrusor to contract some and Ext. Pudental to relax external sphincter
*But internal sphincter still closed
physical obstruction
hyperkalemia!
bradycardia!
hematuria without dysuria
renal neoplasia
