  1. Reform faction gained control of the dry stamp and tampered with Henry’s will. This gave the Regency Council the power to award titles.
  2. Norfolk and Gardiner were removed from power to ensure the Reformers were dominant.
  3. It soon became clear the Council was unworkable and a strong leader was necessary.
  4. Somerset was heavily promoted by Paget.
  5. Somerset used bribes and coercion to take control. His supporters were rewarded.

  2. Dudley, Southampton, and Arundel unite against Somerset, mobilising 2,500 troops.
  3. Somerset gathers peasant support, but is unsuccessful in mustering an army. He appeals for the help of Lord Russell but does not receive it.
  4. Somerset moved Edward to Hampton Court, then Windsor Castle. Edward is frustrated.
  5. The rebel Lords accuse Somerset of kidnap and inciting unrest.
  6. Somerset surrenders and is arrested.

What are the five stages of Dudley becoming Lord President?

A
  1. Arundel and Southampton turn against Dudley. They plan to use his friendship with Somerset to incriminate him.
  2. Dudley already has the support of Edward and Cramner. Lords St John and Russell also defect to his faction. This creates a Reform majority.
  3. Due to his control over household administration, Dudley has power over the King, and stations his allies around him.
  4. Southampton and Arundel are removed from the Council.
  5. 1552: Somerset executed on fabricated charges.
