When and how did the Middle Ages start
The middle ages started when the Roman Empire fell in 476 ad.
Why was Europe such a violent place during the Middle Ages
Everyone was fighting for power, there was no food, and no safety.
Who is thought to be a key figure in bringing stability to Europe? What event lead to the power of this figure and how did he bring stability?
The key figures name was William The Conqueror that brought stability to Europe. He brought peace to Europe by winning a battle and created the feudal system.
Why is the feudalism hierarchy often drawn in a pyramid shape?
There was one king, more lords,more knights, and even more peasants
What did Feudalism provide?
It provided protection.
What did a lord’s strength depend on?
The more land the more power.
What two things did a lord needed to defend his property and people?
He needed knights and kings.
How was life as a merchant
different than peasant or lord?
If they secretly lived in a village for 366 days.
How could a regular serf escape from serfdom? Explain
A merchant was free and was able to make money.
How did a guild control society?
They made prices.
Why was religion so important to people living in the Middle Ages?
Because they all want to go to heaven and they would get punished if they don’t donate.
Why do you think medieval people accepted without question what the church was telling them?
Because they want to go to heaven.
Why do you think people would want to become a Monk or Nun?
So that they can read.
Describe 3 ways in which the church was central to people’s lives?
Because it would educate people, it would tell people what to do and the king.
The Church was the only organization at the time offering education. How did this role give the church power?
Because they could teach them incorrect information and get away with it and get money out of it.
What were the Crusades? Who was involved? What were they fighting over? What was the main purpose of the Crusades?
The crusades were battles for Jesus. Both Military men and Ordinary men were involved. people that weren’t as fortunate money wise joined crusades
What did Europeans bring back from war?
Travellers returned to their homes with new ideas and attitudes that led to new ways of thinking about their own lives and their own societies.
What two things did the Crusades lead to? Explain them.
Opened up safer routes for thousands of religious pilgrims — men, women, and children — visited the holy sites and met different societies.
What was the Bubonic Plague’s nickname?
The Black Death.
One major cause of the plague was what and how did it spread?
Flea infested rats bite humans and then the bite transfers germs into the human.
How did the plague reach Europe?
When ships from Asia arrived to Europe from the Black Sea it came with them.
Why were the peasants revolting and in what did it happen?
Taxes got higher so they could provide for the war and the hundred years war devastated the country side.
What was the result of the peasants’ revolt?
Many peasants killed many nobles and burned many manors.
How did the peasant revolt demonstrate a change in world-views?
It changed the way people saw the world because the way the poorer people got treated was way more unfair than it already was and that affected the way peoples world views.
