Political geography

understanding nations and their role in international relation
looks at why political spaces emerge in the places they do and how the character of those spaces affects social, political, economic, and environmental norms and practices

strong nationalism= loyal to and belief in their nation and its rights

politically organized area in which a nation and a state occupy the same place
one nation on one territory - the boundaries line up exactly
eg. france, and japan, vatican

sir francis drake the pirate brought things back for the queen
mercantilism - people sent out to trade and bring things back
after the peace of westphalia there were countries with names and borders defined by the royalty of europe

why has nation state caused problems

colonial powers defined boundaries for their own benefit without the thought to cultural or linguistics groupings, languages, religions, or physical geography

forces that unify people
eg. language

forces thar dived people
eg. reglious differente, linguistico diffrenced

unitary governments

centralized and exercises poor equally over all parts of the state
eg. britian

federal governemnt

organisms state territory into religions, sub states, or provinces who then have a degree of autonomy

centralization

when power become more concentrated in the central government and usually results in a unitary government such as china or the former USSR
countering devolution

devolution

movement of power from the central government to the regional government within the state
keep the state together

multinational state

a state with more than one nation inside its borders; applies to almost all states in the world

multistate nation

a nation that stretches across borders and across states
kurds

stateless nation

a nation that does not have a state

supernational organisation

three or more states that form an association to achieve shared goals for mutual economic/social/political benefit
