Midterm 3 Flashcards
What are traveling waves
-Consider a wave on a string
-When a wave pulse travels down the string
-Sound wave bounces off and comes back
What are standing waves
When both ends are secured…(like a guitar)
Waves keep reflecting off ends and you get
standing waves
When two traveling waves approach collide,
there is
superposition and interference
What is superposition
the combination of two waves at the same location
Two types of interference:
constructive and destructive
What is constructive interference
when 2 pulses interfere in a manner that makes the pulse larger
What is destructive interference
if 2 pulses are 180 degrees out of phase with each other, and interfere, and they destroy each other resulting in a line
if its not 180 degrees, there will be a shallow line
What conditions must be satisfied to get standing waves
-When both ends are secured…(like a guitar)
-Waves keep reflecting off ends and you get standing waves
What are antinodes
-Maximum constructive interference
-point of superposition
