Wooden or metal tool for smoothing or assisting in the throwing of a pot on the wheel
Rib
A natural of polyester sponge fastened to the end of a duel or stick and used for absorbing water from pots during throwing
Sponge stick
A tool with a flattened curved or rounded end. The tool is used for designing and trimming excess fat off of a spinning form
Spatula tool
A short firm cutting edge which can be held at a right angle to the rotating pot
Trimming tool
The bottom part of the ceramic pottery piece on which the main piece stands
foot
The bottom of a pot that has been cleaned if all glaze before firing
Dry foot
The non glossy surface quality of a completely fired glaze
Matte
An embossed or intaglio impression that can be used to build to use up pattern on clay
Stamping
An age old decorative feature. A spherical jump traditionally formed by pressing in the inside of a pot
Boss
A base relief of medallion made in a small press mold and stuck with slip onto a pottery surface
Sprig
A cabinet in which unfinished objects are stored to slow their drying. Plastic wrap can also be used
Damp box
A furnace for firing ceramic products. Essentially a box of refractory bricks into or around which heat is introduced either by combustion or radiant
Kiln
A machine with a paddle used for grinding and mixed within the barrel and forced forward through the narrowing channel
Pug mill
A small portable turntable used for rotating pottery in any state except slip in order to work on or decorate pottery. Also referred to as a banding wheel
Bench wheel
A large piece of equipment that allows the artist to flatten out clay evenly throughout.
Slab roller
Kneeding plastic clay with the fingers and heel of hands in a spiral motion which forced out trapped air pockets and devolve a uniform texture or mixture of clay body
Wedge
Hand building method of construction where a ball of clay in the plastic state is repeated pinched and turned between the thumb and four fingers to create a pot or bowl
Pinch technique
Hand building method of construction which utilizes rolls of clay or coil rope in the plastic state to build up walls that are joined together internally or externally
Coil technique
Hand building method of construction which utilizes flat pieces of clay that must be joined together
Slab technique
Fine awl for cutting clay
Needle
hand forming method of construction where a ball of clay is hollowed out on a revolving wheel head
throwing technique
to scratch the surface of something to make it rough- when done properly two pieces can join together
score
a compound of decomposed and altered feldspathic rock consisting of aluminum along with non plastics, such as quartz, and organic matter.
