A

a. Racial demographic: Up until last 25 years’ immigrants came from Europe. It has since changed that instead of Europeans immigrating immigrants are coming from Latin America.
b. ELL – More children are coming from minority language backgrounds.
c. Population is aging – birthrates have dropped
i. Are there enough young people to help pay for the aging population?

A

a. Assimilationist - People have to give up their language, culture religion to become more American.
i. Forces groups to abandon their cultural traditions to become part of the “American” race.
ii. Suggests that immigrants should conform to the American way of life.
iii. Also suggests that by not conforming to the “American” way we are separating ourselves and weakening our society.
b. Cultural pluralism- explains that we should celebrate diversity and that it is one of our greatest asset.
i. Believed it is an immigrant right to hold on to their traditions and culture.
ii. In return these traditions strengthen more to American culture.

A

a. Transnational – people crossing borders more frequently. Massive migration. Cross-cultural and multicultural this must be emphasized so that students can become more accepting.

A

a. Sensitive to the academic calendar
i. Must remember we are teaching students that are from multiple different religions. Have to be sensitive to their religion and their various religious holidays and time of prayer.

A

a. Socialize agent that effect a child’s gender identity
i. Ex: Facebook, Tweeter, Instagram, and any social media.
b. TV, music videos, and video games –
i. TV lead to stereotyping, gender role imaging in commercials, and show ideas of what a certain gender is supposed to be like.
c. Media – TV shows and movie characters.
d. Toys –
i. Sexism by choice due to picking of games.
ii. Gender stereotyping by colors and actions.
e. Places/Activities –
i. Some places or activities are more catered to one gender or the other.

i. Understanding how learners put together their knowledge. Strive to know about a students’ family makeup, their interest, concerns strengths, and problem-solving strategies.
