- Summarize three factors that account for the shifting demographics of population in our country.
a. Racial demographic: Up until last 25 years’ immigrants came from Europe. It has since changed that instead of Europeans immigrating immigrants are coming from Latin America.
b. ELL – More children are coming from minority language backgrounds.
c. Population is aging – birthrates have dropped
i. Are there enough young people to help pay for the aging population?
1. Birthrates have dropped significantly causing lack of students & workers to pay for the again population
- Explain three differences between the assimilationist model and cultural pluralism.
a. Assimilationist - People have to give up their language, culture religion to become more American.
i. Forces groups to abandon their cultural traditions to become part of the “American” race.
ii. Suggests that immigrants should conform to the American way of life.
iii. Also suggests that by not conforming to the “American” way we are separating ourselves and weakening our society.
b. Cultural pluralism- explains that we should celebrate diversity and that it is one of our greatest asset.
i. Believed it is an immigrant right to hold on to their traditions and culture.
ii. In return these traditions strengthen more to American culture.
- Summarize three ways in which children can learn prejudice.
a. Observing others
i. Saying derogatory things, learning from elders or people that we look up to.
b. Group membership
i. Saying racist things to feel like they belong.
1. Ex: a group excludes or approves other a person in the group to fit in will sometimes do the same.

i. Based off how traditional or new world someone’s religious beliefs are can cause prejudice.
- Describe three things that teaching toward a global perspective emphasizes.
a. Transnational – people crossing borders more frequently. Massive migration. Cross-cultural and multicultural this must be emphasized so that students can become more accepting.
b. Communication
i. Helps students for the future by helping to understand other cultures which can help them with their future endeavors.
1. How this is sometimes done is through technology.

1. Students must be aware of things that are happening in other parts of the world that can affect them and others.

ii. To help grow academically. Helps foster academic achievement due to helping ELL student understand what is being taught in their class.

i. Not loss traditions and cultures of one’s heritage.
c. Bi-cultural –
i. Combining the customs and cultural attitudes of two nations, peoples, or ethnic groups.

- Summarize three suggestions given to educators dealing with religion in schools.
a. Sensitive to the academic calendar
i. Must remember we are teaching students that are from multiple different religions. Have to be sensitive to their religion and their various religious holidays and time of prayer.
b. Dress code
i. Students have a right to were religious garments.
1. Ex: Hijab
c. Learn/Teach about various religions
i. Encourage students to learn of other religions so not to form stereotypical bias about religions they know less knowledge about.
1. Ex: Teach knowledge about other religions a part of curriculum.
Explain three of the socialization agents that influence a child’s gender identity.
a. Socialize agent that effect a child’s gender identity
i. Ex: Facebook, Tweeter, Instagram, and any social media.
b. TV, music videos, and video games –
i. TV lead to stereotyping, gender role imaging in commercials, and show ideas of what a certain gender is supposed to be like.
c. Media – TV shows and movie characters.
d. Toys –
i. Sexism by choice due to picking of games.
ii. Gender stereotyping by colors and actions.

i. Some places or activities are more catered to one gender or the other.

i. Students with disabilities get to be in regular class rooms as much as possible.

a. Learn as much as possible about the students and their hobbies and interests.
i. Understanding how learners put together their knowledge. Strive to know about a students’ family makeup, their interest, concerns strengths, and problem-solving strategies.

c. Diversity Education
i. Everyone is equally in a class. We may all be different on the outside by we all have the same potential to succeed and that difference doesn’t separate us. 24/7 approach.
