Stressors
Things or situations that trigger us because we perceive them as threats
Stress producing factors can be either ?
Pleasant such as going away on spring break or
Unpleasant- example Failing a big exam
Define Stress
A reaction that is triggered by any event or even thought which makes you feel threatened or unbalanced
How does your body react to stress ?
In response to the threat your body reacts by releasing hormones to prepare itself to meet the demand and either overcome it or attempt to adopt to it in order to restore Homeostasis
Define Homeostasis
A state of balance and calm a condition of optimal functioning, with internal interdependent parts acting in unison
Who Referred to this Hormonal preparedness as Flight- or Flight
Walter Cannon
Define Fight- or flight response
When a threat is perceived, the body will instantly prepare itself simultaneously for two modes
What are the two modes of Fight- or flight response
Immediate protection action to fight against the threat
Or
To run and escape the threat
How many stages are there to Fight or Flight
There are 5 stages
What is stage 1 of Fight or flight
Stimuli is sent to the brain. By your vision.
What is stage 2 of fight or flight
The brain deciphers the stimulus and cognitively appraises whether there is a threat. If there is no threat then the response simply ends.
Define Cognitively appraises
The way in which an individual interprets a stimulus
What is stage 3 of fight or flight
The released neurotransmitters fire up an emotional arousal. Which then activates an immediate physical arousal in which nearly every physiological system in the body jolts into action to achieve the same purpose that is to get the maximum amount of physical energy and stamina your body is capable of into the muscles to either fight or flee from danger.
What is stage 4 of Fight or flight
The body will remain in this heightened state of physical arousal until the brain has received cues that the threat is over
What is stage 5 of Fight or flight
Crisis is over the body calms down and attempts to restore homeostasis
Define emotional arousal
A state of heightened strong emotions
Define physical arousal
A state of heightened strong physical reactions
What is positive stress called?
Eustress
Define Eustress
Positive stress which is purposely sought out: is motivating, improves performance, and is perceived as being well within our ability to cope.
What is a lesser known stress reaction in relation to Cannons fight and flight ?
Freeze response
Define Fight and flight Freeze response
Part of the stress response whereby the person freezes like a deer caught in headlights.
What is the Freeze response normally associated with ?
PTSD
Define PTSD
Part traumatic stress disorder- a mental health disorder that is triggered in people who have experienced or witnessed a very traumatic event
Define General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS)
A theory that describes the physical and chemical changes the body goes through when confronted with stress . This happens in three phases.
