Midterm Exam 2015 Flashcards
(21 cards)
Abduction
The lateral movement of a body part away from the midline of the body.
Adduction
The lateral movement of a body part toward the midline of the body.
Asymmetrical
Lack of correspondence in shape, size, and position of the body parts on both sides of the body (e.g., one arm bends while the other straightens).
Ataxia
Atypical muscle contraction resulting in uncoordinated movements.
Athetosis
Muscle tone that fluctuates between high and low, making movements imprecise and uncontrolled.
Bilateral
Pertaining to or affecting both sides of the body.
Distal
Point farthest from the central part of the body, the trunk.
Extension
Straightening a body part.
Hypertonia or Spasticity
Muscle tone that is higher than expected and joints are stiff or inflexible.
Hypotonia
Muscle tone that is lower than expected and joints are overly flexible.
Internal Rotation
Turning a limb in toward the midline of the body.
Lateral
Pertaining to or relating to the side.
Medial
Pertaining to or relating to the middle.
Obligatory
Having to occur, as seen in atypical motor development when primitive reflexes cannot be overcome.
Prone
Lying on the stomach.
Proximal
Point closest to the center of the trunk.
Reaction (or Postural Reaction)
Subconscious movement that uses visual, vestibular, tactile, and proprioceptive information to establish the normal relationship of the body in space.
Reflex
Movement performed involuntarily in response to a stimulus.
Supine
Lying on the back.
Symmetrical
Correspondence in shape, size, and position of the body parts on both sides of the body.
Trunk Rotation
Process of turning or twisting the body; movement takes place between the shoulders and hips.
