Midterm Study Guide Flashcards
(25 cards)
Mind/Body Dualism
the mind and body are completely separate from one another and do not influence each other in any way
Materialism
everything is reducible to physical parts or in the case of the mind it is nothing more than the brain and the physical parts of the brain
Shifts in the Mind/Body Problem
started as spiritual ideas then moved on to more naturalistic ideas; the big shift was the invention of the microscope, Descartes, and the biomedical model; we are now changing to include the mind more such as the biopsychosocial model
Rene Descartes
coined mind-body dualism and said that mind and body are completely separate
Phenomenology
referring to the lived experience or the experience of a phenomenon; ex) the phenomenology of delta waves is sleeping
Biopsychosocial Model
includes the biology part such as pothgens, genetic history, physical history etc; psychological part such as stress, happiness, depression; social part like family, friends, work, etc; all of these parts work together to help give a more accurate and conclusive diagnosis or treatment for a patient
General System Theory
everything is basically a part and a whole; ex) and organ is a part of a organ system and a whole organ; we are part of a community and a whole individual
Homeostasis
keeping a stable internal environment in response to a changing external environment; it is important to health because when we are not in homeostasis disease occurs
Iatrogenic Illness
an illness brought about through clinical intervention; any sort of injury or illness done through medical intervention
Psychosomatic Medicine
different from neuroimmunology; looks at how the mind affects health; ones thoughts and feelings can influence our health; how ones psychology affects the body and how we treat it; ex) treating may be done with medication and therapy or meditation
Double Blind Design
both the researcher and participant is unaware of who is getting the placebo and who is not
Neuroplasticity
the brains ability to grow, adapt, and change in response to everyday things that we do or do not do; brain is plastic; can be done through the creation of new neurons, changing the paths of impulses etc
Mindfulness
experiencing everything that is happening in a non-judgemental way; you are aware and noticing the present moment not in the past or future; mind is not thinking about anything except the present moment; but you are NOT mindless
Psychoneurofeedback
specifically looks at how experiences and changes are happening during neurofeedback; this can include psychological changes such as a reduction of seizures
Neurofeedback
type of biofeedback that basically involves retraining of the brain; info such as heart rate or brain waves are used
Lived Experience of Alpha Waves
relaxing, reading, yoga, coloring; default state when our mind is idle
Lived Experience of Theta Waves
meditation, daydreaming; more relaxed creative
Lived Experience of Beta Waves
problem solving like solving a math problem, socializing, accomplishing tasks; excess means stress of anxiety
Lived Experience of Gamma Waves
olympic level meditating; higher mental activity; rarest; hyper awareness and focus
Neuroimmunology
deals specifically with the immune system and how we think and feel can impact our immune system; ex) being stressed can lower our immune system response
Holistic Impacts to Our Health
can think about the biopsychosocial model
Hypnotic States
trance like state; can not be forced, continuum; we go in and out of hypnotic states throughout our day; stage hypnosis is not hypnosis
Psi Experience
refers to a psychic phenomenon; KNOW EXAMPLE
Mystical Experience
Some of the characteristics include the perception of being infinite, feelings of peace, touching the ultimate ground of reality (may have different answers based on culture/religion), and transcendence of space and time. Psychedelics can induce them. An example is the man from the book who was sitting on his porch and all of a sudden everything became very bright and he felt at one with everything.
