Q

What is Harness Suspension Syndrome (HSS)?

A

When the patient remains motionless in the harness resulting in blood pooling in the legs and occlusion of veins by the harness. When a patient is rescued there is a risk that toxic pooled blood will rush to the heart causing an overload of the right ventricle.

Q

How do you treat Harness Suspension Syndrome (HSS)?

A

While suspended: provide high-flow oxygen and encourage them to keep moving/flexing their limbs.

When a patient is removed: remove the harness and tight clothing but never lay the patient supine. Try to keep the patient vertical as much as possible to prevent all that pressure from going to the heart
