What were the economic causes?
Edward risked losing taxes as french threatened to take Gascony (wine region) and Flanders (wool region)
What were the political causes?
- Edward thought he had a better claim to the French throne than the French king at the time
- France offered to help with the Scots who Edward was in conflict with
Describe what happened in phase 1
Edward II won important battles @ Crecy and Poiters and gained control of Gascony, Calais and other territories
Describe what happened in phase 2
The French won back some of the territory they lost
Describe what happened in phase 3
- Henry V became English King + led the english into the Battle of Agincourt 1415
- after this, H went on to conquer Normandy + tighten his grip on France
- after his death, his son took over, French got back most of their lost land
- French were inspired by Joan of Arc’s leadership to take back their country
What were the short term consequences of the Battle of Agincourt?
- French outnumbered the english 3:1
- French lost 7000 - 10,000 men at Agincourt
- changed course of warfare, cavalry become less important than the archers
What were the long term consequences of the 100 Year War?
- increased nationalist feeling in both countries
- English identity developed - country began to see itself as ‘apart’ from Europe and as having a common language and homeland
- England looked to conquer lands outside Europe and went to develop an empire in land further afield
What were the medium term consequences of the 100y war?
- france unified under one king
- england lost money because of territories such as normandy
- some english people got very rich by stealing riches from towns and villages
- foot soldiers became the key element in the army
- gunpowder, canons and handguns were used more in battle
- new and improved taxation system began for france
How did the 100 year war contribute to the birth of the English identity?

- some areas of France devastated due to all the fighting
- riches stolen
- fewer battle casualties for the english
