Migration
Movement of people across a specified boundary to establish a new permanent (lasting more than 1 year) residence. Can be national or international.
Voluntary migration
Free choice about whether to move or not
Forced migration
Little or no choice but to move
Chain migration
People from a particular source area follow other pioneers from that area to a new destination, receiving help in the form of transport, accommodation, work, etc.
Remittance
Money sent home to families by migrant working elsewhere
Depopulation
An absolute decline in the population of an area, frequently caused by out-migration
Stepped migration
Progressive movement from rural areas to small town, to regional centre, to national metropolis.
Family life cycle
Families with children passing through various stages over time with corresponding changes in housing needs
Counterurbanisation
Process of population decentralisation as people move from large urban areas to smaller urban settlements and rural areas
Refugee
Someone who has been forced to leave home and country because of a well founded fear of persecution on account of race, religion, social group or political opinion.
Internally displaced person
Someone who has been forced to leave their home for reasons similar to a refugee but who remains in the same country.
Diaspora
The dispersal of people from their original homeland
Labour migration
Migration from one country to another when the primary purpose is to seek employment
Guest worker
Foreigner who is permitted to work in a country of a temporary basis e.g. farm labourer
Assimilation
Becoming integrated into mainstream society
Migrant culture
The attitudes and values of a particular society to the process of migration
