Theories of movement
Neoclassical economic theory - wage diff low - high countries
Dual labor market theroy - pull factors in developed countries bring migrants to fill low skilled jobs, domestic popn don’t wanna
New economics of labor migration - remittances can improve family at home lives
Relative deprivation theory - income diff. Successful migrants can afford better education and QoL
World systems theory(sp too) - trade and industry move, so do ppl who get loss of work and QoL fall
National identity easier to define for some than others
Strong:
- common lang and history
- clear physical boundaries (opposite skyes pivot agreement divided volatile regions)
- gov actions - USA pledge alligence 2 flag, teach British values
- sport - ldn2012 Olympics
Weaken:
- tribal/religious diff that could be worsened by extremists
- international migration blends cultures and challenge norm - sharia law uk
- social media allow identities built through common interests - westernization
- poor political standing could = ppl embarrassed to be associated with country
Evaluation:
- Somalia shares similar language, cultures heritage, laws, religion yet competing clans threatens NI by lack national identity due to disintergration
- sport strengthening could be SR
