Yoghurt sources
Yogurt, leafy green veg, cheese, canned fish, milk
Calcium role
To maintain strong teeth and bones
To maintain healthy nerves and muscles to support blood clotting
Excess calcium symptoms
Stores excess calcium in organs like the kidneys, can increase risk of developing kidney stones and cause the kidney to stop working.
Too little calcium symptoms
Weakened bones and teeth
Bending of bones
Slowed blood clotting
Children that don’t get enough calcium can develop rickets or osteoporosis from weakened bones.
Iron sources
Red meat, liver, dark green veg, wholemeal bread, egg yolk
Iron role
Important part of haemoglobin which makes blood red
Excess of iron symptoms
Poisonous:
Constipation
Nauseousness
Stomach cramps
Too little iron symptoms
Iron deficiency anaemia
Pale skin
Fatigue

Bacon, stock cubes, ham, salted butter
Salt (sodium) role
Supports nerves and muscles function
Helps to monitor body’s water content

Food containing a lot of protein, dairy products, beef and salmon
Phosphorus role
Develop strong teeth and bones for making cell membranes (particularly in brain)

Makes calcium absorption more difficult

Fluoride source
Dental products, toothpaste, mouthwash
NHS suggests brushing teeth 2x daily to get fluoride daily requirements

Maintain heathy teeth
Strengthens teeth
Fights off tooth decay and harden enamel
Excess fluoride symptoms
Poisonous - can cause discoloured teeth, cancer and problems with bones
Too little fluoride symptoms
Causes teeth and enamel to weaken, eventually leading to tooth decay
Iodine source and role
Veg, dairy products, seafood
To make certain hormones
Iodine deficiency
Can lead to goitre (swelling of neck) and complications with unborn babies.
Too much water?
