Q

what are the strengths of minority influence?

A
  • research evidence demonstrating the importance of consistency - Moscovici’s experiment showed that a consistent minority opinion had a greater effect on changing the views of other people than an inconsistent opinion
  • research support for deeper processing - Martin et al - presented a message supporting a viewpoint and measured participants’ agreement, one group heard a minority group agree with the initial view and other heard a majority group agree, after hearing a conflicting view, the participants’ attitudes measured again and people were less willing to change their opinion if they listened to a minority group so their message has been more deeply processed and a more enduring effect

Q

what are the weaknesses of minority influence?

A
  • tasks involved are artificial - doesn’t represent how minorities attempt to change the behaviour of people in real life like in the jury where the outcomes are vastly more important, this means that findings are lacking in external validity and are limited in what they can tell us about how minority influence work in real-world situations
