A

What is a hydric soil?

A

A hydric soil is a soil that formed in a saturated, flooded or ponded condition for a long enough portion of the growing season to develop anaerobic conditions in the upper layers.

Describe the soil by Feel

A

Add water to a small sample and roll it into a ball, if it crumbles when squeezed it is sand, if soil does not crumble and does not ribbon it is loamy sand.

If the soil does ribbon it is further separated by how far it ribbons
2.5: Loam
2.5-5: Clay Loam
more than 5: Clay

wet a small portion further and fell, how does it feel?
Gritty: Sandy parent texture
Smooth: Silty parent texture
Neither: no parent texture

Describe soil sieving

A

A known weight of soil is passed and separated down a sieve to break out the ratios of each grain size, this test is limited by several factors once grains become sufficiently small.

The smallest grains may be further separated through the pipette or
hydrometer method
