What is Mise en Scène
“Putting into the scene”
What is Setting?
The physical environment in which the action takes place
Location: when movies are shot at an actual location taking advantage of its physical features
Studio Set: When sets are built from scratch in a studio
CGI: Computer-generated imagery can be used to create or enhance movie sets
What is human figure?
Staging and Acting
What is Lighting?
Can guide of viewers attention, build suspense, propel a narrative. Lighting can be hard with clearly defined shadows, or soft. Lighting also has direction; lighting can come from any direction causing many multiple effects.
What is contrast (Lighting)?
The relative intensity of key and fill lights
- key light is the film maker’s primary source of illumination (lights the object from the front)
- fill the lights is the light that fills in shadows created by the key
- backlight helps contrast dark shadows
3-point Lighting
“High key lighting” = low ratio, low contrast
“Low key lighting” = high ratio, high contrast
What is Composition?
The arrangement of objects and figures in a setting
