Mitigation/ Re-Balancing Flashcards
What is mitigation?
Re balancing carbon cycle and aiming to reduce impacts of warming
Renewable energy
UK gov aims to have 1/3 energy from offshore wind by 2030
80% Sweden’s energy is nuclear and HEP
However, expensive for LICs and requires to have already industrialised to implement
Afforestation
2/3 South Korea now forested after losing much forest in WW2
Carbon Capture Storage
Boundary Dam, Canada aims to cut its CO2 emissions by 90% by trapping carbon underground before it can reach the atmosphere
Climate Agreements
Paris Agreement (Sets global targets for warming not to raise above 2 degrees pre-industrial)
However, controversial as takes away opportunity for LICs to industrial + develop. Unfair?
Overall evaluation of mitigation
Offers long term solution that could re balance carbon, unlike adaptation
Addresses all aspects of carbon and water cycles, along with ocean health and forests
However, doesn’t address immediate issues, renewables may be inaccessible for LICs, and requires coordinated global action to work
Indonesia Forest Moratorium
Reduces deforestation and removal of peatlands, saves stores of carbon cycle
Reduce emissions by 26%
However, illegal logging still taking place and has only reduced by around 15%, so more needs to be done
