mitosis Flashcards
(6 cards)
1
Q
mitosis
A
asexual reproduction
2
Q
what happens
A
ordinary cell makes new cell by dividing in 2. both new cells are genetically identical to original.
3
Q
asexual reproduction?
A
involves only 1 parent. offspring have identical genes to parent, nor variation between parent and offspring
4
Q
mitosis definition
A
cell reproduces itself by splitting to form 2 cells with identical sets of chromosomes
5
Q
diploid cell dividing
A
- in cell that’s not dividing, DNA is spread out in long strings
- if cell gets signal to divide, needs to duplicate DNA, so one copy for each cell. DNA forms X-shaped chromosomes.
- chromosomes line up at centre of cell and cell fibres pull them apart. 2 arms go to opposite ends.
- membranes form around each of sets of chromosomes, become nuclei of new cells.
- cytoplasm divides
- 2 new cells - genetically identical
6
Q
mitosis makes ?
A
new cells for growth and repair
