mitosis Flashcards
understand what cell division is and idenitiy the stages of mitosis (15 cards)
why do organisms need to make new cells?
to be able to grow, repair damage ad reproduce
what is cell division?
the splitting of a cell to form two new cells?
what is mitosis?
the process where one parent cell divides into two identical daughter cells
what is mitosis responsible for?
growth and repair
what are the four stages of mitosis?
prophase
metaphase
anaphase
telophase
what happens in prophase?
chromosomes condense, nuclear membrane begins to break down
what happens in metaphase?
chromosome line up in the middle of the cell, spindle fibres attach each chromosome to centrioles which are located on opposite sides of the cell
what happens in anaphase?
chromosomes spread away from each other, spindle fibres pull sister chromatids apart
what happens in telophase?
nuclear membrane reforms, produces two nuclei with identical sets of DNA, cell divides into daughter cells
how many chromosomes are there in nuclei?
46
what is interphase?
where the cell spends 90% of its time growing, replicating its chromosomes and preparing for cell division. it is also doing its specialised function in the body.
what is cytokinesis?
the division of the cytoplasm which forms 2 new cells
what is a chromosome?
a structure found inside the nucleus of a cell, its made up of proteins and DNA
what is a daughter cell?
a daughter cell is the cells that are formed after cell division. they must both have their own identical copy of the DNA so that they can serve the exact same role in the body
