Mitosis And Meiosis Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is a DNA overload and why does it occur?
It is when the cell gets too large for the DNA to meet the cells needs, this occurred because the cell does not replicate DNA. Consider it to be like a library in a small town.
What are the two reasons cells divide
It places more demands on it’s DNA and in tern has trouble moving nutrients and wastes across the cell membrane
What is the ratio of surface area to volume
Length x width x number of sides/ length x width x height
Surface Area: Volume
What happens when the cells surface area increases?
The volume to area ratio decreases.
Why doesn’t a cell grow as much as the organism it is a part of?
It would have a harder time getting Oxygen, nutrients, and other essentials in and wastes out
What is formed during cell division
Two daughter cells
When a cell divides each of the two daughter cells get what?
They both get a complete copy of genetic information. By reducing volume.
How does cell division solve the problem of increasing size?
It decreases the volume with the daughter cells
Could a cell divide without any preparation and survive just fine?why?
No, it would have no genetic info.
What is the first stage of cell division? What happens during this time?
Mitosis is the stage in which the nucleus is divided
What is the second stage in cell division and what happens during it?
The cytoplasm divides in cytokinesis
What are chromosomes made of
DNA and Protiens
What do chromosomes consist of?
Two identical chromatids
What are the chromatids attached to?
Centromeres
