mitosis and the cell cycle Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are the series of stages cells divide in called?
Cells divide in a series of stages called the cell cycle.
What are the stages of the cell cycle?
Cell growth –> DNA synthesis –> Further growth occurs & DNA is checked for errors –> mitosis –> cytoplasm separates (2 cells formed) –> temp cell resting period or it stops dividing –> cell growth
What happens during DNA synthesis?
chromosomes are now double stranded
How do multi cellular organisms use mitosis?
To grow or replace cells that have been damaged
What happens in the cell cycle before mitosis?
During the cell cycle the genetic material is doubled and then divided into two identical cells. Before a cell can divide it needs to grow and increase the number of sub-cellular structures such as ribosomes and mitochondria. The DNA replicates to form x shaped chromosomes which are 2 copies of the same chromosome..
Mitosis
1
The chromosomes line up at the centre of the cell and cell fibres pull them apart - the 2 arms of each chromosome go to opposite ends of the cell
2
cell fibres pull them apart - the 2 arms of each chromosome go to opposite ends of the cell
3
Membranes start to form around each of the set of chromosomes (nucleus starts to form)
4
Cytoplasm and cell membrane divide - left with 2 identical daughter cells
