Scientfic Method: List the steps
- Observation - ask a question
- Hypothesis - make a prediction
- Expierement - Test your theory
- Conclusion - Record your result
What is a Fluid?
matter that has no fixed shape, can flow and take the shape of its container
What is a Pure Substance?
substance thats made of only one type of matter and has one particle throughout
What is a Mixture?
2 or more pure substances combined
What is a mechanical mixture?
heterogenous mixture; different substances can be seen
What is a Homogenous Mixture?
mixture where the different substances cannot be seen (it looks like one substance)
What is a Solution?
homogenous mixure, 2 or more substances that look like one
What is a solute?
substance that dissolves in a solvent to form a solution
What is a solvent?
substance that dissolves a solute
What is concentration?
amount of solute dissolved in amount of solvent (not in quiz 1)
What is a saturated solution?
solution in which no more solute can be dissolved in at a certain temp
What is a unsaturated solution?
solution in which more solute can be added in at a given temp
What is solubility?
ability to dissolve
What is a saturation point?
point at which no more solute can be dissolved in at a given temp
What is a aqueous solution?
water is the solvent
What is viscosity?
the liquids internal resistance/friction that keeps it from flowing
What is density?
mass per unit of volume; calculated by dividing mass by volume
What is buoyant force?
upwards froce that a fluid exerts on an object; opposite to gravity in a fluid
What are the PMOM rules?
- all matter is made of tiny particles
- Particles are always moving and vibration
- particles in matter may be attracted to eachother or bonded together
- particles have space in between them
What is the reason behind something floating?
when the density of the object is less than the density of the liquid
What is the reason behind something sinking?
when the density of the object is greater than the density of the liquid
How to calculate density?
Density = (g/ml) = mass/volume
What is Buoyancy?
tendancy of an object to float when placed in a fluid
What is high viscosity?
slow moving and doesn’t flow as easily (more dense)
