Name of light that comes from above (shining down) and effect?
Toplight – distorts features, look more tired, dark circles
What kind of light is used for backlighting, side lighting, uplighting etc?
Parcans (they’re also used for gobos)
When can practical lighting be used in The Crucible
Flickering candles in the antechamber (Act 3), dying fireplace in Proctor home (Act 2), lanterns in prison (Act 4)
Effect of backlighting and where it could be used
Makes a person a silhouette, casts big shadow over someone else (e.g, Act 3 when Danforth questions Mary Warren)
How can lighting be used to create tension in dramatic moments?
Strobe lighting (strobe light), snap into a red wash (fresnels), increase the intensity of the light
Things that you have to mention when talking about lighting
Intensity, snap/fade, colour, type of light used, line cue for it (maybe also warm/cool colour) and effect for audience. If for a spotlight, must mention hard-edged/ soft-edged
How can lighting be used to reference McCarthyism?
Spotlight getting smaller – how people felt trapped, oppressed and afraid
Things you have to mention when talking about sound
Diegetic/non-diegetic, volume (level), snap/fade, speaker direction, pre-recorded or live, effect on audience. If directional speaker, must say where it is.
How can sound be used to establish setting?
Pre-recorded, diegetic soundscape of bird song, cows, villagers chatting, horse hooves
Act 2: crickets chirping, wind etc
Sound effects that could be used in any act
Surround sound speakers: church bells ringing, hymns, whispers, drums
What does EQing mean/do
EQing a character’s lapel mic boosts the low/high tones and cuts the high/low tones. Makes a character sounds strong/dominating or weak
Echo vs reverb
Echo repeats the last word of a sentence to give it more impact. Reverb gives audience a sense of room size (more reverb in large empty room, e.g prison)
What is delay
When an entire line is repeated, giving it more impact
Panning vs routing
Panning moves the sound from left to right, whereas routing means the sound can bounce around to specific speakers (not in any order). Routing is more chaotic
How sound can be used to reference McCarthyism?
Whispers in surround sound, oppressive powers of rumour, how rumours and lies of communism spread during McCarthy era
What materials were the clothes likely to have been made of and why?
Linen, felt, cotton
cheap and simple materials
Durable and thick so endure strenuous tasks
What were examples of expensive materials and who was likely to own them?
Silk, lace

How were puritan beliefs shown through costume?
Their beliefs were shown through the modest, simple clothing that they wore, preferring to live a simplistic life devoted to Religion.
What clothes would the women have worn?
Long dresses covering legs and arms
Buttoned blouses
Long skirts
Aprons
Coif
Plain black leather shoes
What clothes would the farmers have worn?
Doublets (jackets)
Knee length breeches

How did higher status men show power through costume?
Tall, wide brimmed hats

Black dyes – more expensive
How would character’s personalities be shown through costume?
Parris: materialistic and cares about rep. So a lot of jewellery/gold even though not normal for puritans
Hale; more devout to religion and profession, so simple costume to highlight seriousness
How would Abigail’s character be shown through costume?
Carefree and confident: hair loose, no bonnet – less obedient to Puritan dress code
Sleeves rolled up showing skin, no apron
How is Proctor’s guilt of his sin (adultery) shown?
Aggressive and defensive nature
Sharp movements towards characters, threatening, low menacing voice, refusal to look Abby in the eye, physical distance from Abby
