Q

Mixed-race households often represent the largest proportion of _______ in the most segregated neighborhoods of all metropolitan areas. Why?

A

Diversity (Ellis et al. 2007). This could be because mixed-race households pose less of a threat in homogenous residential spaces than households comprised entirely of racial others. Alternatively, racially mixed households may have a greater willingness to locate in racially homogenous localities when one member of the household is a member of the dominant neighborhood group.

Q

Define segmented assimilation.

A

The segmented assimilation perspective focuses on divergent patterns of incorporation among contemporary immigrants. According to this theory, the host society offers uneven possibilities to different immigrant groups based on social factors, including race and SES. Moreover, segmented assimilation posits that groups will be absorbed by different segments of society. (Iceland & Nelson 2010)
