When including a quote you do not have to use a comma if you replace it with “that”
Ex. The narrator exclaimed that “Joseph Green despised all things cinnamon flavored”
Or
Hemming views abortion as, “…”
Creating flowing grammar
Use [ ] to change words or sections to fit the point of view or grammar with your paper.
Ex. “[She] screamed for…”
Make sure to preserve the essential meaning of the text
Ellipses w/ spaces between the dots
The portion being excluded is on the middle of the quote
Ex. “Jacob ran towards Beth. . . and she died with him on her lips”
Ellipses w/o space in between dots
Either symbolizes words excluded from the beginning or end of a quote
Ex. “…as he cried, full of despair”
Or
“I would love to go to the fair with George, Michael, Sammy…”
Block quotes
- indent each line 5-7 spaces
- no quotations necessary
- end the quote with whatever punctuation THEN source the material
