Mod 4. L33 Flashcards
(4 cards)
nervous system control of thermoregulation
temperature-sensitive neurons in the brain relay information about ambient temperature to parts of the brain, including parts of the hypothalamus (preoptic area)
Preoptic Area (POA)
receives information from temperature-sensitive neurons in the skin, body, etc, which are then thought to be integrated with information about the temperature of the brain in order to enact thermoregulatory responses
warm-sensitive neurons
leads to physiological and behavioral responses that promote cooling (reduced heat production, increased heat dissipation, cold-seeking behavior)
same principle for cold-sensitive neurons but with heating response
mechanism of fever
proinflammatory cytokines (released by various immune cells) cause endothelial cells to synthesize and release prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) which acts upon neurons in the POA to raise the set point
