What are dental models?
Accurate, 3D replica of teeth and other parts of dental arch
How are dental models made?
- Impressions or intraoral scans
- Pouring dental gypsum or acrylic into impressions of teeth and allowing it to harden
- Can also be made using CAD-CAM technology by milling or printing
What is a primary model?
Made from primary impression or intraoral scan
- Purpose = A special tray is constructed on it for taking a secondary impression
What are secondary models?
More accurate replicas of the primary model
- Made to replicate the entire oral structure, including teeth, gums, ridge areas, upper/lower jaws, soft tissue structures, and arch
What happens when a secondary model is duplicated?
Becomes the
1. working model
2. master model [for reference purposes + can be reduplicated if the working model is damaged
What are study/diagnostic models + their function?
made from the original imp –> when no clinical alterations have been made –> the study model becomes the primary model
Life-size product of part or parts of the oral cavity/facial structure for study or treatment planning purposes
- helps clinicians evaluate pt oral condition/ communication tool with other dental professionals
- visual guide for tx planning and pt education
What is the purpose of a working model + common materials used for duplication?
Created by duplicating the secondary model for articulating and construction of dental prosthetics
common materials
1. common imp products
2. reversible hydrocolloids [one of the most common due to accuracy]
3. elastomeric imp materials
What is a refractory model?
Made of material that withstands high temperature of metal casting or soldering without disintegrating
