Q

Make an argument for nuclear energy

A
  • Nuclear energy has less environmental impacts compared to burning fossil fuels because it releases no greenhouse gases, for example, carbon dioxide.
  • There are numerous safety features to account for human error, equipment failure, and external risks such as earthquakes. For example, control room operators spend over 8 years in training, automatic shutdown and emergency cooling systems, and backup electricity.
  • Nuclear fission is a very efficient source of energy, so small amounts of fuel are requires. A 7 gram pellet of uranium can generate as much energy as 3.5 barrels of oil.
  • Because nuclear energy requires such small amounts of fuel, not much waste is created, meaning there is a low volume of waste to dispose of.
  • Nuclear energy is a valuable medical tool. It can be used to help detect cancer or heart disease. It can also be used to help treat diseases such as caner through radiation therapy.
  • Nuclear power is incredibly reliable, is it not dependent on environmental conditions like other sources of energy such as wind power.
