Modification For Injuries Flashcards
(13 cards)
Lordosis. What is it and how to train?
Exaggerated inward curve of the lower back. Strengthen the abdominals and lengthen the lower back
Kyphosis. What is it and how to train
Exaggerated, forward rounding of the upper back
Work on opening the chest and strengthening the upper back
Scoliosis
Sideways curvature of the spine
Work both sides of the body evenly, striving for balance from right to left. Stretch the tight side and strengthen/fill out the hollow side
Herniated Disk, what is it
A spinal disk has a soft, jellylike center (nucleus) encased in a tougher, rubbery exterior. A herniated disk occurs when some of the nucleus pushes out through a tear.
Herniated Disk, how to train
Where in the spine is the herniation? If in the lower back, be careful of forward flexion and seated exercises. Remember Romana’s famous quote, “When in doubt, leave it out.” Keep your client flat if you are unsure.
Knee issue what to check
Can the client flex the knee fully and extend the knee as is required in SINGLE LEG STRETCH? Is the client able to bear weight as in QUADRUPED?
Knee issues, how to modify
The client can hold the back of the thigh and lessen the degree of flexion if needed on exercises like ROLLING LIKE A BALL, SINGLE LEG STRETCH, etc. If there is pain, leave out the exercise or find a different position.
Hip issues, what to check
Can the client flex the hip to 90 as needed in SINGLE LEG CIRCLES? Can they flex further as in SINGLE LEG STRETCH? Are they able to extend the hip as in SINGLE LEG KICKS and SIDE KICKS? Are they able to circle the leg in the socket?
Hip issues, how to modify?
Plan for a smaller range of motion or omit exercises as needed. You might need to keep the feet on the mat so there is a wider base of support and less stress and action at the hip joint (for example in the HUNDRED.)
Shoulders issue, what to check
check the range of motion. How much can the client flex the arm forward and up? Generally stop below shoulder height for most, before there is pain or discomfort. Also check the range to the sides in a letter “T.” How far can they open the arms without pain? Can they bear any weight?
Shoulder issues, how to modify
You can always cross the arms over the chest for exercises like the SPINE TWIST or the SAW take the arms lower or even keep them on the mat for exercises like ROLL UP and SPINE STRETCH FORWARD. Use the client’s comfort as your guide and take away exercises that are not appropriate.
Neck issues, what to check
check the range of motion. In a seated position can the client look up or down without pain? Can the client rotate the neck from right to left? When lying down, can the client lift the head up (as in the HUNDRED) without pain?
Neck issues, how to modify
Avoid strain. Can keep head down or propped up with a pillow as needed. If the herniation is in neck, keep head down and avoid flexion (chin to chest movements.)
