What are the 3 main steps you must follow when you encounter an ill or injured person?
- Check the scene and the person
- Call for help and or EMS / 9-1-1
- Care for the person
How do you check the scene?
- Is it safe?
- Are there any hazards?
- What happened?
- How did it happen?
How do you check the person?
- Are they responsive? (Touch or verbal I.e., tap shoulder or respond to verbal questions)
- If they are unresponsive check their ABC’s
What does ABC stand for?
Airway
Breathing
Circulation
How do you check the airways?
- If they are responding via moaning or talking their airway is clear
- If they are unresponsive tilt the head back gently and make sure the chin is pointing upwards
How do you check for breathing?
- Put your ear close to the person’s mouth, listen for 5 - 10 seconds for normal breathing
- Look down the person’s chest to make sure their chest is rising and falling with their breath
How do you check circulation?
- Look over the person to see if there are is any life threatening bleeding
You’re out for dinner with your family when a person sitting at the table next yo your drops his cutlery and holds his neck. He is making high-pitched squeaking noises and looks very scared. You recognize that this is a chocking emergency and that the person cannot breath . What should you do first?

Two cars collide at an intersection as you are waiting to cross the street. One of the drivers suffers a very serious injury snd has life-threatening external bleeding. What should you do first?

What should you remember when rolling someone into the recovery position?
- Support and oeotect the head while rolling the person
- Try to roll the person as one unit (head, back, and legs at the same time)
- Roll the person into a position where the body will stay safely on its side
- Check the ABCs after you complete the roll
After rolling a person into the revocery position what should you check?
The person’s ABC’s again
When would you ask SAMPLE question?
Donw during the secondary assesment when the ill or injured person is responsive. You can ask the ill, injured or bystanders at the scene

Signs and symptoms
Allergies
Medications
Past medical history
Last oral intake (food or drink)
Events leading up to the emergency
When should you preform the the secondary assessment
If the person does not have any life threatening conditions that require care

If they are moaning softly

What is the last thing you ate or drink?
