Module 1 Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is the difference between prokaryotic and eukaryotic
Prokaryotes - lack a membrane-bound nucleus
Eukaryotes - have a membrane-bound nucleus
What are some features of Prokaryotes
- no membrane-bound nucleus
- simpler morphology
What are some features of Eukaryotes
- have a membrane-bound nucleus
- more complex
- typically larger than prokaryotes
What is microbiology?
The study of organisms and agents too small to be seen clearly by the unaided eye
Where can microorganisms be found
Found in every environment on earth
What are some features of microorganisms?
- largest population of organisms on the planet
- play a role in recycling essential elements
- can play a role in disease
What are some features of bacteria?
- most are single-celled
- most have peptidoglycan in cell wall
- survive in broad environments
- most are non-pathogenic
What are some features of archaea?
- key distinguishing feature!
- lack peptidoglycan in cell wall
- found in extreme environments
- some have unusual metabolic characteristics
- no pathogenic species identified
What is the key feature that distinguishes bacteria from archaea?
Archaea has unique ribosomal RNA features that make it different from bacteria
Are viruses apart of the three domain system? Why or why not?
No because although they are microorganisms they are not living organisms
What are some key features of viruses?
- they are not living organisms
- they must invade a host cell in order to replicate
- very small!
- can cause a range of diseases (including cancers)
