Management information system (MIS):
Computer-based systems that provide managers with the tools to organize, evaluate and efficiently manage departments within an organization.
Infrastructure considerations:
Hosting, virtualization, hardware platforms, software models.
Hosting considerations:
Local— servers are physically located in your business.
Hosted— servers are hosted in a data center.
Cloud— servers are in the cloud.
Hybrid—a model that combines elements form many of the above.
Virtualization:
Uses software to create an abstraction layer over computer hardware that allows the hardware elements of a single computer processors, memory, storage and more to be divided into multiple virtual computers, commonly called virtual machines.
Virtualization examples:
Running windows on a mac, or running an OS in a browser.
Virtualization benefits:
Reduced capital and operating costs, minimized or eliminated downtime, increased IT productivity/efficiency/agility/responsiveness, faster provisioning of applications and resources, greater business continuity and disaster recovery, and simplified data center management.
Pros and cons of in-house IT:
Quick response, expensive, familiar with system, bad attitude.
Pros and cons of outsourced IT:
Slower response, cheaper, not as familiar with system, may bring broader competence, better service.
Infrastructure considerations:
Accessibility, availability, maintainability, portability, reliability, scalability, usability, cost.
The foundation for all business software:
Accounting software, CRM systems, ERP systems, SCM system.
Key components of a database:
Tables, records, fields, queries.
Examples of commercially available databases:
Microsoft access, Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle RDBMS, MySQL, QuickBase, IBM DB2, Microsoft Excel.
