What cluster level resource management capabilities does DRS have?
Initial placement - when the VM is turned on
Load balancing - Performs or recommends VM migration
Power management - With DPM enabled, compares cluster and host level capacity tot eh current demand and historical demand
What three automation levels does DRS offer?
Manual, partially automated and fully automated
What does Manual automation do?
When a VM is powered on DRS recommends placement. When cluster is unbalanced DRS does nothing
What does Partially automated do?
When a VM is powered on DRS places VM on best suited host. When cluster is unbalanced DRS displays recommendations.
What does Fully automated do?
When a VM is powered on DRS places VM on best suited host. When cluster is unbalanced DRS migrates hosts accordingly
How do you turn on DRS?
On the cluster features page of the New Cluster Wizard
What is EVC?
VMware Enhanced vMotion
What does EVC do?
Ensures that all hosts in a cluster present the same CPU feature set to VMs. No manual CPUID masking is required
What are two methods of creating an EVC cluster?
Create an empty cluster with EVC enabled
Enable EVC on an existing cluster
What must applications be written for in order to be compatible with EVC?
To use the CPUID machine instruction so discover CPU features
What is the default location for the VM swap files?
On the VMFS datastore
What happens if the swap file location is different than the destination?
The swap file is copied to the new location
How do you remove a host from a cluster?
Right-click host and select Enter Maintenance Mode, drag it to a different inventory location
What resource pool does a host retain when removed from a cluster?
The root resource pool
What can you do to a VM that is network-constrained?
Use network traffic shaping to give the VM more bandwidth during peak hours
What can you do to a VM that is contrained by memory?
Add memory shares or increase the VM’s memory reservation
What can you do to a VM that is contrained by CPU?
Add CPU shares or increase the VM’s CPU reservation
