Module 12 Flashcards
Cholinergic MOA
mimic the action of acetylcholine by stimulating the parasympathetic nervous system
(stimulates the rest and digest system)
Cholinergic indications
Glaucoma: reduces intra ocular pressure
Myasthenia Gravis: helps improve muscle strength
Alzheimer’s: Used to manage s/s by increasing acetylcholine levels in the brain
(creates more bodily fluids)
Cholinergic Pharmacokinetics
Varies heavily depending on med
Cholinergic Adverse Effects
Increase sweating
Increase salivation
Bradycardia
hypotension
diarrhea
N/V
Cholinergic Toxicity
Cholinergic crisis = over stimulation of neuromuscular junction leading to muscle weakness and resp failure
Cholinergic Pt education
recognize side effects
-if they worsen seek medical attention
Cholinergic contraindications
hypotension
bradycardia
Cholinergic assessing and documenting
monitor vital signs
-activating the parasympathetic nervous system leads to bradycardia and hypotension
Assess for OD
-muscle weakness, excessive salvation, sweating
Anticholinergic MOA
prevents breakdown of acetylcholine which increases the availability
blocks the parasympathetic nervous system
more of a sympathetic nervous system response
Anticholinergic indications
over active bladders: decrease urinary urgency and frequency
some resp conditions: specifically asthma as it helps open airways
nausea: dry everything up
parkinson’s: reduce tremors
Anticholinergic pharmacokinetics
heavily depends on the med
anticholinergic adverse effects
altered mental status (especially in the elderly)
dry mouth
constipation
urinary retention
dry eyes or blurry vision
Anticholinergic drugs pt education
recognize side effects
-if they worsen seek med attention
Anticholinergic contraindications
glaucoma (can increase ocular pressure)
urinary retention
myasthenia gravis
Anticholinergic toxicity
agitation, confusion, hallucinations, and seizures
Anticholinergic assess and document
monitor vs
-blocks parasympathetic syst.
-tachycardia, hypertension
assess for OD
-agitation, confusion, dilated pupils, dry skin, tachycardia, and urinary retention
