Module 12 - Nervous System II Flashcards
(23 cards)
Vertebrae Names & #
Superior—>Inferior
Cervical: 7 Thoracic: 12 Lumbar: 5 Sacral: 5—>1 Coccygeal: 4—>1
About how wide around is your spinal cord at its widest point?
~the diameter of your pinkie finger
Filum Terminale
“Terminal Thread”
Tapered End of the Spinal Cord
Where is the White Matter in the Spinal Cord?
Superficial
Where is the Gray Matter in the Spinal Cord?
Deep
Describe the Gray Matter in the Spinal Cord
Butterfly Shaped
Posterior/Dorsal Horn
Anterior/Ventral Horn
Location of Reflex Pathways/Reflex Integration Centers
Spinal Cord
What holds the Spinal Cord in place?
Denticulate Ligaments
Anterior v Posterior Anatomy of the Spinal Cord
Anterior Fissure
Posterior Sulcus
Posterior Root Ganglion
What does the Anterior Horn contain?
Cell Bodies of Alpha Motor Neurons
Meninges
3-layered bag encasing the CNS
3 layers of the Meninges
Deep—> Superficial
Pia Mater
Arachnoid Mater
Dura Mater
What is the meninges filled with?
CSF
What does CSF stand for?
Cerebrospinal Fluid
Where does the Spinal Cord start and end?
Foramen Magnum of the Occipital Bone —> L1/L2
Cauda Equina
“Horse Tail”
Bundle of Nerves floating in a bag of CSF at the bottom of the Spinal Cord
Lumbar Puncture/
Spinal Tap Location and Procedure
L3/L4
A needle is introduced into the vertebral column.
Nerves float out of the way and CSF is collected.
Epidural Anesthesia
bathing nervest/a region of nerves in anesthesia
anesthesia goes on top of the dura mater
=epi dural
How does the White and Gray Matter change as you go from the Sacral region of the Spinal Cord to the Cervical region?
White Matter:
gets thicker the more superior you go
Gray Matter:
predominates the sacral spinal cord
and is still pretty thick at the lumbar region
Location of Gray Matter in the Brain
Superficial
Location of White Matter in the Brain

Anterior v Posterior Root v Spinal Nerve Function
Anterior: Motor
Posterior: Sensory
Spinal Nerve: Both Motor & Sensory Info
(Mixed Nerve)
Location of Alpha Motor Neuron Cell Bodies
Anterior Horn of the Spinal Cord
