Q

Onset of schizophrenia in women

A

can peak around 20 until 24 too, but not as much as men; instead, women often get diagnosed at their 40s or even early 60s

Q

Severity of schizophrenia in women

A

Women have a less severe form of schizophrenia and display more symptoms of depression that may lead to them either not being diagnosed at all or be diagnosed with other disorder

Q

Why do women have a lesser form of schizophrenia compared to men?

A

Estrogen may possibly play a protective role to women having a less severe form of schizophrenia (they can particularly help positive symptoms of schizophrenia decline); declining levels of estrogen at menopause might explain why late-onset of the disorder is more likely to strike women
