Module 15 Flashcards
(24 cards)
What are the five key types of information systems?
-office automation system
-transaction processing systems
-management information systems
-decision support systems
executive information systems
What are office automation systems?
underlying support system e.g. word, teams
What are transaction processing systems?
record business transactions, e.g. sales and purchasing. systems. require some kind of input before they will operate.
What are management information systems?
used by management to analyse data and provide info for decision making. Helps to understand business. e.g. timesheet or sales by geographic areas.
What are decision support systems?
unlike management information systems, they are not used to make decisions.
allow management to “ask” whatever questions they want.
What are executive information systems?
used by the most senior people who require high-level info as their decisions tend to be less routine and more strategic. More summarised info, like graphs and charts.
What is a communication device?
any device which allows the communication of data between different devices or computer systems.
What is a network?
two or more computers connected together, usually to share data or processing capabilities.
What is a local area network?
provides the sharing of computer resources of a home, office or building. Intranet
What is a wide area network?
links up several LANs and is used to describe a network on a national scale.
What is the Internet?
links up all the WAN at county level.
What is peer to peer network?
when two computers are connected
What is an active network?
when a network can change without human interaction.
What is application software?
does specific tasks for users
What is systems software?
runs the necessary base services on the device
What is middleware?
coordinates systems and applications.
What is open source software?
freely shared and downloadable.
What is proprietary software?
much purchase a license, may be known as software for service.
What is a programming language?
set of rules which tell the programme how to respond to inputs. The text written is known as source code.
What is a unified modelling language?
tool used by developers to create an abstract model of what the system will look like.
What is protocol?
rule in place for writing software. so that different softwares can connect with each other. e.g. HTTP
What is structured data?
data that is easily readable and understandable by machines
What is unstructured data?
completely ad hoc, difficult to interpret e.g. email or tweet.. needs human interaction.
what is enterprise resource planning?
finding a way for systems to interact with each other and become as streamlined as possible.
