Module 2 Flashcards
(20 cards)
Define electronegativity
The ability of an atom to attract electrons in a covalent bond
Define ionic lattice
Repeating pattern of oppositely charged ions
Define covalent bond
shared pair of electrons
Two anamolous properties of ice caused by hydrogen bonding
Ice is less dense than water, the molecules in ice are held apart by hydrogen bonds.
ice also has a relatively High melting point as hydrogen bonds are relatively strong
What is a pyramidal shape
it has one lone pair and three bonded paisa that repel each other. Lone pair repels more strongly, resulting in a pyramidal shape.
What is a non linear shape
It has two lone pairs and two bonded pairs. Bonded pairs repel, lone pairs repel more than bonded pairs, so there is a bond angle of 104.5
What is a tetrahedral shape
It has four bonded pairs, which repel each other strongly and equally, resulting in a bond angle of 109.5
What is trigonal planar shape
Has 3 bonded pairs, electrons repel as far as possible
What are isotopes
Atoms of the same element with the same number of protons and electrons but different number of neutrons. Isotopes of an element have different masses.
What is relative atomic mass
The weighted mean mass of an atom compared with 1/12th mass of an atom fo carbon-12
relative abundance
The amount of one substance compared with another
Relative isotopic mass
The mass of an atom of an isotope compared with 1/12th mass of an atom of carbon-12
Formula of Ammonium ion

Formula of a carbonate ion
ion with formula CO3 2-
Formula of a hydroxide ion
an ion with the formula OH-
Formula of a nitrate ion
an ion with the formula NO3 -
What is silver ion formula
has the formula Ag+
Formula of Sulfate
an ion with the formula SO4 2-
Formula of zinc ion
ion has the formula Zn2+
