Module 2 DEFINITIONS Flashcards
(10 cards)
Relative isotopic mass
Mass of an isotope relative to 1/12 of mass of C12
Relative atomic mass
Weighted mean mass of an element relative to 1/12 mass of C12
Shells
Energy levels made up of orbitals
Orbital
Region around nucleus that can hold up to two electrons with opposite spins
Ionic bonding
Electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions. Hold cations and anions in ionic compounds.
Covalent bonding
Strong electrostatic attraction between a shared pair of electrons and nuclei of bonded atoms
Dative covalent bond
Covalent bond in which a shared pair of electrons supplied by one of bonded atoms only (eg. Donate a lone pair of electrons)
Electronegativity
Measure of an atoms ability to attract shared electrons in a covalent bond
Intermolecular forced
Weak interactions between dipoles of different molecules eg, hydrogen bonds, permanent or induced dipole Dipole
Hydrogen bond
Type of permanent dipole dipole interaction between electronegative atom eg. O,F,N and hydrogen attached to an electronegative atom.
